GIOVANNA BARBATI

Giovanna Barbati is a cello and viola da gamba player and has been for many years leader cellist of the Baroque and classical Orchestra Academia  Montis Regalis, performing under such conductors as: T. Koopman, S. e B. Kuijken, J. Savall, C. Hogwood, M. Huggett, C. Coin and others. As leader cellists she has played also with Accademia Bizantina, Les Talens Lyriques, Il Complesso Barocco; now with Real Companìa òpera da Càmara and Concerto de’ Cavalieri.
She has refined the quality of her interpretation of the XXth century’s repertoire with S. Palm, has studied composition and has attended the courses held by J. Christensen and C. Coin at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Her teachers of viola da gamba were A. De Carlo e P. Pandolfo. She plays the baroque repertoire with the harpsichordist C. Tiboni and the modern one with the pianist E. Flückiger, with whom performs music drawn from women composers. She has played, besides, with the String Quartet Montis Regalis, and Ensemble Aurora. She has played chamber music in important Festivals troughout Europe and America and recorded ten CDs for Opus 111 with Academia Montis Regalis, receiving rapturous praise from critics. She has moreover recorded for Arion, Il Capriccio, Bongiovanni, III Millennio, Chandos, Virgin, Harmonia Mundi France, Symphonia, Naïve, K617, Deutsche Grammophon and Sony. She has recorded for many radios in Europe and America. She plays a 1751 A. De Comble cello.
